Although the web design project is over, this website was actually used to create my project. Though I was unable to use the various colors and styles, I liked the font of the website. This website can be used for future students who might need help looking for inspiration.

For my web design project I decided to focus on the website thehungerproject.org. I thought this was a great website for it because it’s a non profit that helps to end world hunger, especially focusing on children. I started off with some darker colors because I knew this would have to be a serious website. The main colors that I used were grey, blue, white and black. I decided to have a big picture on each page, like a lot of the example websites had. To keep it cohesive, I made each of those pictures black and white, and played with the hue and saturation to get them to look darker and more somber. I used fonts that I thought were serious and simple to get my message across. I also added some color pictures in so the website wasn’t too dull, and I thought that they added a nice touch. My donate now box is big and red to get the point across, and I put it on every page, and even added a donate page just to really drive the point home that people need to donate; a good consistent call to action was what I was going for. I put facts on the front page, because I thought it looked really cool when other sites, like charity-water had mind blowing facts to start off the website. I also put a sentence type call to action on the first few parts next to the main picture, because I thought it fit in really well with those pictures and with the website. I tried to keep each box aligned to the grid so that it was a nice neat, clean website. All in all, I think it looks clean and appealing.

This project, as I’ve said for every project in succession, was the most difficult for me because of the tight time constraints.  I was only able to make 4 pages for my website design, because I didn’t want to have more pages  with less interesting and less creative layouts.

I chose VH1′s Save The Music Foundation for this project.  Save The Music is a nonprofit that is dedicated to providing proper equipment and musical services to children in underprivileged schools.  Unlike the organization’s real website, which features a very light, kid-friendly layout, I decided to target my site towards those who are interested in donating and being a part of helping music programs stay afloat in public schools.  I found the background for the site on Google, and I thought it was modern, elegant, and conveyed a strong point.  I like to think of the middle of the background, which has several overly-bright bands of light, as the “light” that music brings to children, so I thought it was an appropriate complement to the content on each page.

It was important for me to include a sidebar on each page, since Save The Music has a surprisingly large lack of media on their current site.  I struggled, therefore, to fill space on the site with engaging content , so the sidebar is a nice way to break up the page.  Again, I chose to stick with softer shades of blue and green to give the site a professional yet enhanced look.

Due to my past experiences with gradients (I know Professor Harper hates them), I used various opacities in my type boxes to give the website some depth.  However, I will admit that I ran out of time with this assignment, so I did not have a chance to polish up some of the pages as much as I’d have liked.

Overall, I think that this site is a well-represented, more mature version of the current Save the Music site.  It obviously lacks the same amount of content as the real site, but I know that the purpose of this final assignment was to think about layout, readability, and user flow, and I definitely took all those into consideration as I built these pages, and I think the constant nave. bar on the top of the screen, in addition to the social media buttons and CTA to donate on every page, makes the site much more accessible and easy to navigate.

For my website project I chose The Jimmy Fund as my non-profit. The Jimmy Fund is a non-profit charity in coalition with the Dana Farber Cancer that raises money for the fight against cancer for children in adults. The organization is the official charity of The Boston Red Sox.

After looking at The Jimmy Fund’s official charity website I realized that it was lacking images. On each of the pages on my website, I featured a large image in order to attain the viewers attention. I constructed a home, about us, events, volunteer, beating cancer, and red sox corner page. I decided to include the Jimmy Fund logo in the header of all of the pages and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute logo on the footer of all of the pages.

I decided to use the color scheme of black, white, and red (the colors prevalent in the Red Sox’s uniforms). Back home in Massachusetts, The Jimmy Fund is heavily identified with the Red Sox so I thought it was appropriate to use their colors.

For the layout, I wanted to design something simple and easy for the viewer to read and obtain the necessary information. Through looking at the charity water website I was able to attain a better understanding of how effective spacing can impact a website. I used the 978 grid to align various text boxes as well as smaller images. Throughout the pages I also incorporated small images that relate to the specific page.

I decided to utilize two different fonts in all six of the pages: orator and trebuchet MS. I changed the leading in order for the paragraphs to be read more easily.  I wanted to make sure that the viewer could read the typography accurately. For the search bar, I made the page that the viewer was on red, in order to contrast from the other pages. I hope that my new design allows the viewer to successfully and easily navigate through the website.

Funnel Design Group website

I am posting this website for two reasons. First of all, the Funnel Design Group does some phenomenal graphic work in a number of different fields including advertising, television, web, and even 3D animation. But what is also very interesting is the web page itself. It is a very creative and interactive website that is worth taking a look at for some inspiration.

This is just one of the many websites that has a terrible design. This article tells of the 30 worst looking websites you could possibly go to. They are all over the place with no dominating images and confusing colors. The worst part about them is that they really don’t use a grid system or any type of alignment at all. These sites are prime examples of what not to do, and they really show you how important alignment and grids are to websites and to your web design project.

This website won the Reader’s Choice Award for best use of images in web design. It shows that a dominant image is really the most important part of a great website. This website uses a great dominating image of a car speeding down the road to get their point across and attract readers. To view the other nominees, click here.

Cool Agency Website

December 4, 2010  |  Inspiration, Resources, web, webdesign  |  No Comments

This is the interactive ad agency digitas’s website. I really like the concept behind it; using different boxes that only give you a vague picture of what it could be about so you have to find out for yourself. It’s very creative, and I’ve noticed that most ad agency’s have cool, creative websites to showcase what they are all about. This one is probably my favorite. Check it out here.
