For my redo, I worked hard to implement the changes suggested by Professor Harper. As for the grid, I aligned my spread so that it was perfectly even on both sides of the page. I noticed that the columns don’t really do this, so I moved the type slightly outside the column so that it would fit perfectly between the page. I knew that the type on my image could not be read very well, so I took the hardest type to read and I cut it out, this way it looks like my article just has one, simple to read paragraph to start it off. I also got rid of the gradient I used over the type because I thought that it actually made the text harder to read. On the second spread, I changed my paragraphs so that they were the same size, I did this by changing the 4th page back to 2 columns, and rearranging my pull out quote. For my tour dates, I made them stand out better by choosing a bigger and bolder typeface. I then shortened the title and made my tour dates bigger so they would stand out more. I aligned all of it with the type in the article and put the dates and title to the left so they weren’t inside the bright tan smoke, which made them much easier to read. I underlined the title for neatness. I then rearranged my text so they would be the same amount away from both images on the second spread. I moved the text box down, to give the type more room away from each image, and I thought this ended up looking a lot cleaner.

For my magazine redo, I did not have too much to fix. On the cover page, I moved around the text to make it farther away from the image and then aligned the date. For the 1st spread, I pulled the green from the image and made it the type color for the sub headlines. For the 2nd spread I did not have anything to fix. And for the third spread, I added a picture of Karl Lagerfeld to the “sidebar” part of the page and added arrows to direct it towards his obsessions. I got rid of some of the obsessions as I did not want the page to be too cluttered. I think I cleaned it up a lot and made everything neater. I hope you like it and have a nice holiday!

My magazine needed a few changes for the redo. On the front cover I added the date of the magazine and brought the subheads closer together. They were spaced farther apart in my first version which made it awkward for the eye to travel across the page.
On my first spread I changed the color of “Discovering” to a less opaque swatch of the word “Florence” this way it maintains visual continuity and is more readable. I also eliminated the hyphenation in the intro text.
On the second spread, Professor Harper commented that the type should only be left justified. I double-checked and the text is indeed left justified. It may look like it is fully justified because the final lines of each paragraph stretch most of the way across the columns. I also changed my grid. Previously my increment was not set to be the same as my leading in order for the text to “breathe.” Now my grid is set to be the same as leading, condensing the text more.
On the third spread I carefully adjusted the text wraps in order to minimize any awkward jumps between words. As with any oddly shaped text wrap, sentences are going to be broken up unless it is a perfect shape. Now the sentences flow more smoothly around the strangely shaped images. I also lightened the images by about 50% so they would be lighter for printing.
Hopefully these changes make my magazine easier to read and visually appealing. The redo helped me learn more technical knowledge of how to design layouts.

For my magazine redo, there were several things I had to fix. For the cover, I was told that the type was too dark and blended in too much with the page. Because the original color from the type was taken from the feather in the photograph, I had to brighten the colors of the feather in photoshop so it would be consistent with the color of my type. It is now a much more electric and readable color. While I was in photoshop, I also did some work on Miley’s “snaggle tooth” (her bottom tooth that looked kind of funny before) so it would be less obtrusive to the overall image.

For my first spread, I was told that the headline needed a slight push off the page so it would stand out more. I put a very light shadow on the title of the article so it would pop a little bit more. Although this is not very easy to see in the pdf or jpg, it looks much more obvious in the actual document itself and when printed. For my second spread, I had to change the alignment of the image on the left page so that the text was equidistant from it on both the top and the right side. For some reason, this actually was not so simple and took a lot of playing around with to get it right. However, I think it looks pretty good now. I was also told to align the date, but according to the grid, my folio was perfectly even.

My sidebar was probably what needed the most work. The type was way too small when printed, and it was hard to read what it said in the boxes. Originally, I was going to keep the titles of the boxes black, but for some reason when I made the document into a pdf, the black just didn’t look right. So I decided to keep all the type white so it was clean and easy to read. I also made the type a little bigger and shortened the descriptions. I think it is pretty legible now. I also aligned the “Stages of Cyrus” at the top so it fit perfectly over the box. Overall, I think these improvements have made my magazine a lot better, and I am pleased with the final result.

Magazine Rationale Redo

For my Magazine Redo I got rid of widows on my captions and my introduction on the first spread was shortened and evened out. Also the by line was lightened and better aligned

The most work came on the side bar, where I had to get rid of the abundance of hyphenated words. I tried playing with word order and a few other methods but ultimately ended up making the font smaller and more open. I also stylized the heads and changed the text colors to coordinate with the members of the band and the color bars underneath.

This project was the most cumbersome for me, as I’m sure it was for everyone else in our class. I decided to choose a topic for my magazine that I could actually relate to, and that was traveling during the night. My magazine is called “Red-Eye” in reference to the last flight each evening at airports (which is often called the ‘red-eye’ flight), and if this magazine were to be put in publication, it would contain content exclusive geared towards an American traveler who wants to get to know worldly cities once the sun goes down.

With this in mind, you’ll notice that I have only used photos from dusk until dawn, and all my photos were taken off of Google Images. I picked Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, because it is once of my favorite cities in Europe, and it is often overlooked by many tourists when they visit neighboring countries like France and Germany. The sidebar (or something similar to it) discusses smartphones that are essential for any world traveler, and I feel that it complements the article because many foreigners on vacation do not realize that their phone may not work outside of the USA without first taking some special precautions.

The photos I chose are powerful and use bright colors to contrast the darkness of the rest of the world when they were taken. I used the purple from my first spread and carried that color swatch throughout my magazine, and I also pulled a shade of green from the photo inside club Karlovy Lazne, as I thought the green and purple looked great together. The type used in the feature’s body is Adobe Garamond Pro at 10pt, while I used Cochin and BlairMMT as my additional fonts on the cover page and feature title.

Overall, I’m satisfied with my magazine project, but I wish I had more time to work on it. I found text wrapping to be more tricky than I expected it to be, and I hope you can see how much time I put into my feature (40+ hours). The final product, in my opinion, is easy-to-read, flows logically, and uses large, striking visuals to break up the otherwise large amounts of type in the feature.

For the magazine project, I chose to do a spread on the television show, Glee. Because this show is a comedy, I wanted to make the spread lighthearted, and use a lot of fun images. I also used bright colors that I drew from the images. I ended up having a cover, plus three spreads, two of which have a very dominant image.

I think that since this article is about a TV show, it makes sense to have a focus on images of the actors/characters, because that’s what the reader really cares about. Though there were several quotes I wanted to use as pull quotes, I ended up having only one, because I wanted to make sure to avoid having a spread with too many competing elements.

The cover includes an image of the cast as well, and has very little text, because I didn’t want to make the cover look too busy, or cover up any of the actors’ faces with ink. Overall, I think that the use of images and colors allows me to effectively communicate the mood of the piece, as well as the show as a whole.

I actually enjoyed working on this magazine. The reason is mainly because I have a burning passion for the band that I decided to base it off of. The band is called Mumford and Sons, and they are an awesome folk alternative band from the UK. I thought it would be a really cool idea to feature them in an article about how they’re taking over the U.S., since I just recently saw them in a sold out concert in Philly. At first, I had to decide what kind of magazine I wanted to do, and I came up with an indie music/lifestyle type of magazine. It has a very sophisticated, almost retro feel to it, and I think it works perfect with the band and their image. I named the magazine Parlotone. The word Parlotone doesn’t actually mean anything, in fact, I’m fairly certain it isn’t even a word. I know a band called The Parlotones, and the word felt like a perfect name for my magazine, considering it had the word Tone in it, and that’s a very musical word.

I decided to use my favorite image, one of them in a barbershop, as my cover image. I scaled it down and I think it looks great for the cover. I picked fonts that I thought would go really well with my sophisticated, folky magazine. They’re older fonts, and they seem very gentleman-like, which is perfect for the band and the magazine. I picked high quality images of some live playing, and added another image from the barbershop photoshoot because I thought it fit well with the article. I changed the colors into a more sepia, tan because I thought it went well with my pull out quotes and my overall magazine color. I wanted it to be very uniform and simple and I think that comes across when you look at it. I tried to use big, dominating images, and I really liked how my first spread turned out. My sidebar goes really well with the article because it shows their North American tour dates, and the article is all about how they’re taking over the U.S. The colors all match and it’s a very earthy, old style which is exactly what I thought of when I first started. I used an advertisement for scotch whiskey, because I thought it went perfectly with my magazine and its gentleman-like quality. All in all, I think I really accomplished what I set out to make my magazine to be, and that is a very folky, sophisticated and stylish music/lifestyle magazine featuring an amazing unique band.

*To look at the final spread click on the jpeg to see the PDF of the entire magazine!

For the magazine assignment I decided to feature Jackie Kennedy. I’ve always admired Jackie’s classic style and believe that she is one of the most influential fashion icons for American women. After collecting a multitude of images of Jackie Kennedy, I decided to only use black and white photographs. I believe the black and white images emulate Jackie’s simple and elegant style. I titled the magazine “society” because I believe that her style has exhibited a profound influence on society.

I added an inner glow effect on the headline in order for it to stand out from the background. I selected the image of Jackie holding an infant Caroline on the cover because I believe it looked like she was specifically posing for a magazine cover. The advertisement I selected to feature is a campaign for Chanel, which was one of Jackie’s favorite designers. After listening to the suggestion from Professor Harper, I decided to change the typography from a bright red to a darker color.

The first spread is a full-length image of Jackie with her daughter Caroline. I chose to use the font “Snell Roundhand” because I believe it embodied Jackie’s graceful style. After listening to suggestions from the class, I decided to erase my previous image of Jackie and her son JFK Jr., and integrate a large portrait of Jackie that takes up half of the spread. On the second page of the second spread I divided up the text by placing an image of Jackie in an Oleg Cassani evening gown. I used Photoshop to crop out the uneven outline of the image as noted by Professor Harper.

On the first page of the third spread is my favorite image I used in the magazine. It is a large photograph of Jackie looking up to the sky wearing her signature three strand pearl necklace. On the second page of the third spread I incorporated a side bar. I utilized the side bar to illuminate the significant pieces of Jackie’s wardrobe. Since the magazine is about Jackie’s style, I thought is was imperative that I expressed that she is known for wearing pearl necklaces, large sunglasses, and tailored Chanel suits.

After finishing the third spread, I realized that I still had a large amount of images that I wanted to incorporate into the magazine somehow. I looked over the previous spreads and realized that the remaining pictures would be out of place on my already constructed spreads. I then decided to create an additional spread that consists entirely of a timeline of Jackie’s life. I researched significant moments in her life, and placed them with corresponding images. I hope that my magazine illuminates Jackie’s simple and classic style that has influenced countless of women!
