Ways to Layout Magazines Tutorial

November 16, 2010  |  magazine, Resources  |  No Comments

Here is a website I found when I was designing a layout of my magazine.  It shows you how to wrap the text around an image you want and cool ways to do a pull quote all in InDesign.

Vogue Magazine

October 29, 2010  |  Resources  |  No Comments

Vogue is one of the most famous magazines in the world.  It is known for its sophisticated, classy, chic Fashion magazines.  For this project I have started flipping through magazines and I think that is the best advice to see what you want to do.  Depending on what ‘interests’ you look through magazines that the article or topic would appear in to see what it would look like.

Samantha Fetner-Poster

For my poster project I chose the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer initiative.  The Council of Fashion Designers of America created this philanthropy to help raise money for Breast Cancer.  Clothing such as scarves and t-shirts have been made in the past to help raise money for this cause.  Two years ago Fashion Targets Breast Cancer teamed up with Nine West to start “Runway Relief”.  “Runway Relief” is models wear pedometers on their shoes for the entire week of Fashion Week and for every step they take they raise money for breast cancer.  For my poster, I began with really wanting to make a bra out of words and have it hanging on a hanger.  However, I evolved the bra idea (being that it was not working and was a little too cliché for breast cancer) and turning it into legs and pink shoes for that Runway Relief is for walking.  I took pictures of my friends’ legs and then posterized them in Photoshop.  I used hot pink instead of the softer tone of pink for breast cancer because I think it was more powerful for my poster.  I think this poster really works for Runway Relief.  I personally do not like when things are too crazy and cluttered and I think my poster is clean, simple, yet also chic.

Dormify Posters

Hi! For my post I am going to do a little advertising.  This summer I worked for a company called Dormify.  They are just starting up and the website launched just a few weeks ago.  The website is geared at college kids to find bedding they actually like for their dorm rooms.  The company also has these posters in every letter of the alphabet and greek alphabet in which you can choose what you want.  Each poster has a black and white foundation and upon request you get to pick the third color to match your room.  The posters will be for sale shortly, but they are great. The website has a new blog each week (all written by me) so go check them out! Dormify.com These posters are all made in photoshop and illustrator  and thought I should share them and show what you can do with letters.

Photoshopping Actors and Models

Photoshopping can be a great tool for posters, magazine covers, etc., however, sometimes editors take photoshopping to another level.  There has been much controversy in the past few years in the news of  people photoshopping celebrities and enhancing their image to make them look better to the public.  As a result, the public sees this false image of celebrities.  It is hard to tell these days what is real and what is not.  Here is an image of Cameron Diaz.  It is a before and after of her with a lot of photoshopping done.

Fashion Night Out Poster

One of my best friend’s Amanda Zuckerman had the privilege to intern at Vogue this summer in the arts & graphics department.  She is currently a sophomore at the Sam Fox School of Art & Design at WashU.  While interning at Vogue this summer, one of Amanda’s biggest tasks was to design Vogue’s second annual “Fashion Night Out” posters. The two posters that she created (one being the one shown) were shown throughout the stores in New York City and on the website (www.fashionnightout.com).  She designed the posters keeping it within theme of last year’s posters.  Thinking ahead to our next project, posters, got me thinking about this one.  I think that the use of the red really stands out and grabs the audience’s attention when looking at it in a store window.  The use of the models softens up the poster for this event, as they are dressed in ‘cute’ clothing.  I think the poster works very well for this event.  I look forward to working on my own project.

Will & Grace: Jack Makes his Resume

I found this funny short little clip from Will & Grace (one of my favorite old t.v. shows).  Jack is making his resume (even though he does not have too much to contribute to it) and all he says is “I want to make sure the font is helvetica”.    Even though Jack does not have a lot of experience to add to his resume, at least he will have a good font.  Enjoy this little clip =). John Lennon's "Imagine" Wall

John Lennon's "Imagine" Wall

This past summer I went to Prague.  I saw all of the sights and when I thought my day was over, I stumbled across what is known as the John Lennon “Imagine wall”. Prague is described as a ‘magical city’ within both the new and old town.  Everything looks like a Hollywood movie set, except in an alley way there is this long graffitied wall.  I live in New York and I see graffiti everywhere all over the city, Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn but never in my life have I seen a wall like this.  This graffitied wall does not look like it fits in Prague.  It  started off with a peace sign with the words Imagine written through it.  Over time people have left comments, some including the lyrics of the song, on the wall.  It has created this huge graffitied wall with the words Imagine still preserved.  I love taking pictures and this was definitely an amazing photo opportunity.
