Skoda: Made of Meaner Stuff

November 2, 2010  |  Resources  |  No Comments

This ad is a very visually compelling and creative way of showing how a car is put together. It is a counterpart to the 2007 spot, “the baking of.” I particularly like the part where the engine-like device is really a pile of snakes, and one of the snakes jumps out at you. I also like the part where the guy’s arm turns into a huge mechanical metal arm that spray paints the car. Overall, I think this is a very unique spot for a car. I’ve never seen anything like it.

Create Your Own Type Face

October 25, 2010  |  inspire, Typography  |  No Comments

This program is awesome, and it’s free too! This video shows you how you can create your own typeface by writing out all the letters of the alphabet out on paper in your handwriting and then taking a picture of it. You can then go in and edit all of your letters and perfect them to make them appear exactly how you want them. The art of writing authentic letters is not dead! Click on this link to see it!

Gorkin Ben Poster

October 12, 2010  |  poster, poster student work  |  No Comments

I chose to do Birthright for my poster. Essentially, Taglit Birthright is an organization set up to provide Jewish youth, as well as some adults, with the opportunity to go on a free trip to Israel one time over the span of ten days. The organization is already very well known among people that birthright would be targeting, and therefore the fact that the trip is free is not something I wanted to focus on for this poster (although it is a great selling point for those who don’t know what Birthright is). Instead, I decided to use the most recognizable and compelling graphic to identify Israel, which is its flag. I also wanted to illustrate the idea of fun, because after all, the trip is meant to be enjoyable. Because my skills in Illustrator are very limited, I decided to create stick figures interacting with various elements of the copy and the image to illustrate the ideas of movement, happiness and fun. I also wanted to keep the color-palette very blue and white oriented, which is what the national colors are. I chose the font “cracked” because I felt like it had a very lively feeling to it; a feeling of breaking out of your shell and having a good time. I also wanted the text at the bottom to curve along the same path as the flag to keep things consistent and flowing. While the execution may not be quite up to par with what some of the others have done, I do believe that the viewer of the poster will at least understand the message that is trying to be conveyed.

Miley Cyrus's "Who Owns My Heart" Music Video

While some of you may scoff, I find Ms. Cyrus’s newly released music video to be quite relevant to the subject of the graphic arts. While Miley herself does not do all that much in the video but stand, and sit, and dance, the video as a whole is actually quite interestingly shot. The variations and contrasts in lighting throughout the video are extremely fascinating for the human eye to follow, and the theatricality of the piece is attention-grabbing to say the least. The piece manages to give off an aura of darkness, but still maintains a bright and lively pop-like essence. All in all, there is no doubt that the “who owns my heart” video is graphically captivating.

I think that this is a very innovative idea for a breast cancer benefit poster. It shows real people interacting with the letters, and is a perfect way of illustrating what the words actually say about wearing pink (because the people are actually wearing pink). I also like the playing around with font size to emphasize certain words. The whole thing is very playful, but at the same time it is very well thought out. I think this a great example of a non-profit organization’s poster.

Dare To Be Different

I thought that this poster was both inspiring and relevant to what we are learning in class right now. Not only is it a very simple yet compelling visual, but it also encourages people to be unique, which is what this project is all about. I also like the hierarchy of the words, because the DARE catches your eye right away, and the DIFFERENT is capitalized. I also like the use of the bright neon green against the black background. Finally, the photograph is funny, which is always a good thing.

Playstation 3 Poster

I like this poster because it is literally quite eye-grabbing. The eyeball has hands growing out of it, which is a very interesting way of representing the playstation brand, but also a very effective one. I particularly like how the eye itself seems very pure and clean, but everything else around it is very cloudy and dirty. It creates a very unique contrast.
