This is one of my favorite websites.

Hey guys some of you are probably know about this website, but if not check it out

http://postsecret.blogspot.com/

People make these little post cards, put one of their secrets on it, then send it off to this guy in Maryland. On an artistic level I love the fact that its so simple; many times people simply hand write their secret on the post card. On another level I love that people are telling secrets that they could never tell you face to face. It’s an incredible art project, but it means so much more then that. This is a little video that tells about what they do, and it shows some of the best post cards. PostSecret on youtube

Enjoy!

the lecture of Stephen Wilkes

the lecture last night was very interesting. I actually prefer the first section, which was made on the Ellis island, better than the China part. ( I of course love the China section a lot) Stephen showed that empty hospital in such a colorful way. I am not a photographer I do not know how to make pics that stunning without photoshop. it will be great if our professor can talk more about photography in the class ( I know it is not a PHO class….)

the China part made me feel very proud and surprised. it seems Stephen discovered some materials that Chinese media may never cover. The pics in that section is more informative.

Here are some pics I love because

1. this is the place where I was born

2. this is where I came from

3. this is my hometown

anyway, I like the angels of these pics. I saw these places almost everyday, but I never saw them in this way.

btw, the city’s name is Dalian

Pulp Diction

A very cool interpretation of one of the most infamous scenes in film. The contrast between the two characters in typeface is very well-done.

Language warning: don’t watch this in the computer lab.

Kick a$$ type art

OK, check these out.  The first one contains explicit lyrics, so don’t watch if offended by some f bombs.  The second one is clean enough.  Really awesome use of type, really creative and really talented flash programming:

Chuck Anderson
Chuck Anderson of No Patterns has some phenomenal merges between photographs, manipulated color, light, and patterns. He can make the mundane into the awe-inspiring by manipulating the images, and giving them a whimsical undertone.

Wordmark

Handling Type

Resume

Evolution

Resume Examples

Example 1: Maxx

  • Reiteration on throwing text in before building design and layout around it. After putting in the type, you have a big block that must be used as an element in the overall design… since you are stuck with this block, you must make sure it’s accounted for.

  • When dealing with small graphics elements, drop shadows are hard to pull off.

  • Type on it’s side needs to be clear… possibly bigger, lose drop shadow and kerned out.

Example 2: Brian Dawson

  • Maybe watch the serif font at the bottom… it seems to contradict the blockiness of the primary section of the wordmark.

  • When separating words with color you can read different ways.

  • Careful with spacing elements too close together that are supposed to be separate blocks.

Example 3: Matt Conte

  • Italicized adds a running, movement feel in the wordmark which can be interpreted as athletic or sporty.

  • If you need to free up space, put computer software skills on one line.

Example 4: Alice Lin

  • Vector vs Bitmap… make sure to have your wordmark in a vector form (Illustrator) so it can be blown up to any size and not look jaggy.

  • Too many indentions can make the text look messy and unaligned.

  • Watch for dangling words.

When fine tuning make sure alignments and spacing are consistent.

Wordmark – It’s Just Type

Wordmark Examples

BBC – So simple can be evolved into many things. Think colors, stacking different, add another block BBC 1, etc.

Yahoo! – Turned the emotional feeling of the “yahoo” sound into a wordmark. Often use color to back idea of the sounds.

ESPN – the lean/italic emphasizes movement as mentioned earlier.

JOOP!muse – Such a thin font would be hard to read at a small size.
