Class Notes Aug 28, 2008

August 31, 2008 |  by kenharper

The first 45 minutes of this class a guest speaker, Kelly Brown, spoke about putting together a resume.. she talked and clicked way too fast for me to take notes, but her ideas were clear and hopefully we all picked up something from her presentation.  Plus, some of her ideas are debatable.

We discussed wordmarks and how they should be simple and scalable.  Your wordmark is your identity. It’s important to make many variations to choose from.  It’s important that your wordmark has versatility.  It should look just as professional and recognizable on a billboard as it does on a business card or on the web. Professor Harper used the crushed Coca-Cola can image as an example.  He showed how the Coke image could be recognized even after being distorted. This image Professor Harper pulled up from the links that students had submitted to the blog site (this site).

You should look into getting your name registered as a domain.  You can do this at http://www.hostway.com It should allow you to register your domain without having to get hosting services as well.  The domain registration should be less than $10 a year.

Professor Harper mentioned it’s important to be surrounded by people who are smarter than yourself.  They may not be smarter overall, but they could have a specific field they are more knowledgable in.

Most  of the time this class period was spent recording embarrassing stories and taking photos, but Professor Harper did mention a couple of ideas and themes that he’d like to keep focus on throughout the course.  These include:

  • The more we communicate with each other, the less likely we are to kill each other
  • Establish a reconnect – Reconnecting a feeling or an emotion that has happened in the past and sharing it with your audience.
  • Communication: Telling stories, hearing stories.

Days with My Father – Amazing Story and Site

The site, Days with My Father , uses a bit tricky, but poetic design to emphasize the dream like images and story line, beautifully tragic.

Olympic Torch Lights the Moon

August 29, 2008 |  by ken harper

This pic is taken during the Olympics. It is absolutely awesome and meaningful. Ryan is so lucky to catch this angle. The dark background brings out the bright color in the fire. The combination of this big event and the moon recorded this historical moment in a very special way.

“I was running late, rushing from my last job to the Bird’s Nest for the men’s 100m final – as I turned the corner with one of my colleagues we saw a full moon rising above the stadium and we could not believe our luck!

“I had to decide if it would be worth stopping to shoot this picture and risk losing my spot in the stadium – I decided I could shoot this image quickly.

“Luckily I had a long lens with me, as it would have been difficult to capture the image without it. I waited a few minutes for the moon to move in line with the torch and this was the result.”

Visually Stimulating Part I – Banksy

Banksy
I’m certain many of you have heard the pseudonym “Banksy” whether in passing, or any other means. If you haven’t, Banksy is a brilliant urban artist. His clever approach to tackling political and social issues is phenomenal. His medium of choice is primarily spray paint and stencil, but his ingenious use of the placement and environment is what brings him into the lime light.

Hey everyone,

I wasn’t sent the email with the user name until today so I know this is late but I still wanted to share something. Drudge Report is a website I was introduced to this summer while away at sleep-away camp in Pennsylvania. After complaining to a friend that I have no idea what’s going on in the world she told me about Drudge Report- a website which has everything important you should know; current events which you would normally read about in the New York Times, important issues going on in other parts of the world, and even silly things like celebrity gossip that you would read on Perez Hilton.

I also like the way it is set up in columns as if it were an actual newspaper it makes it easier to find which articles you want to read.

Maybe I’m the only one who hadn’t heard about this site till this summer but if you haven’t you should definitely try it out!

Visually Stimulating

August 28, 2008 |  by ken harper

I have always loved the combination of hand-drawn art and photos pieced together. I think it gives works a dreamy feel….but at the same time, is rough enough to make a statement. I came across this Web site in high school and though it’s not updated more than a few times a year, even going back to some of the older work again and again brings out new qualities and inspires.

The way the site is set up is an interesting too–there are hidden link everywhere, underneath different sketches, which make the art even more engaging. It shows that with Web design, links are everything, though they themselves can be art.

Visually Compelling

August 28, 2008 |  by ken harper

I have always loved the color usage and contrast, the blending of machinery and people, and the angles and tilts of both the text and the images, within old Soviet propaganda posters and pamphlets.  I’ve always been fascinated with both the look and the feel that these images give the viewer.  There is such a sense of power, pride, control, and advancement within these images that has always captivated me. and also feel that the design and templates used would be both fun and interesting to manipulate myself.
